Thursday August 5 at 7.45pm.  Our book this month is "The Folly of Prayer" by Matt Woodley.

In this book Woodley strips away all the religious-speak and presuppositions we have about prayer, distilling it to the essence of wholehearted engagement with the living God. Exploring an earthy, unadorned, jargon-free approach to prayer, Woodley unpacks a host of fresh synonyms for God-encounters, including prayer as desperation, invocation, mystery, astonishment, groaning and even absence. These marginal ways of praying compel us to engage marginal people--the desperate, the groaning, the victimized and the ignored. As we pray God will open our eyes to the pain of the world around us. With stories from his own experience and biblical and historical examples, Woodley gives fresh language to describe a life grounded in prayer that leads to compassion and service.

Copies are available at the booknook. Join us on Facebook!  Please contact the church office for details.

The Bible tells us that the human heart is an “idol-factory”, taking good things and making them into idols that drive us. In Counterfeit Gods, Keller applies his trademark approach to show us how a proper understanding of the Bible reveals the unvarnished truth about societal ideals and our own hearts.
The First Thursday Bookclub is reading Counterfeit Gods by Tim Keller. We would love you to join us. The book is available from the church Booknook.

Thursday 2 July at 8pm at Lisa Byrnes’ home.  Our book this month is Finally Alive by John Piper.

What does the Bible teach about the miracle of rebirth? In this new book, John Piper explores Jesus’ peculiar command, “You must be born again.” Spiritual rebirth is precious and crucial. When Jesus said, “You must be born again,” he wasn’t simply sharing interesting information; he was directing us toward eternal life. It is essential to know what God intends when he uses this language of being born again, so that we may experience new birth and help others do the same.

The book can be purchased from the booknook or you can read it online at http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/OnlineBooks/ByTitle/3588_Finally_Alive/

The book for our June Book Club is Jesus: a short life by John Dickson.  Recent developments have blurred the view of Jesus for ordinary people. The popular imagination has been captured by conspiracy theories propounded by highly-charged accounts loosely connected to gnostic writings. In 11 chapters, which cover the historicity of the New Testament, Jesus’ birth and family, his historical context, teachings, miracles, death, resurrection and subsequent appearances, John Dickson clears away the mists of speculation and fantasy, revealing the founder of Christianity in sharp focus.  The book can be purchased from the booknook.

Our meeting is June 4 at the home of Lisa Byrnes, starting at 7:45pm.
