This solemn service dates back to the 4th Century and focuses on the shadows falling on Christ in the last hours of His life on earth.  This service of reflection is taken from an early Christian service called ‘Tenebrae’. The name ‘Tenebrae’ is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows” (hence the Service of Shadows).  On this night we will reflect on a small portion of Christ’s pain and suffering the day of His crucifixion.

We will share in Communion at this service. One of the most conspicuous features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of the candles.  As it gets darker and darker we can reflect on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real to Jesus on that evening.  After the Service it is traditional for people to leave the church quietly and return home.
